The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is ramping up efforts to prevent the illegal importation of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), super climate pollutants with global warming potentials hundreds to thousands of times greater than CO₂. Under the Montreal Protocol, developed countries are expected to phase down HFCs almost entirely by 2036.
As part of its national enforcement and compliance priorities, the EPA is actively addressing illegal HFC imports under the current phasedown schedule. In recent months, the agency has reached settlements with companies in five separate cases related to HFC import violations. According to the EPA, climate change continues to accelerate, and tackling super climate pollutants like HFCs is a critical element of its strategy to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
