The European Union has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this, it introduced the “Fit for 55” package—a comprehensive set of proposals aimed at revising existing legislation and introducing new regulations related to renewable energy, energy efficiency, building performance, energy taxation, and carbon trading. The ultimate goal is to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050.
Heat pumps have been identified by the European Commission as a key clean energy technology critical to decarbonizing heating and cooling systems. By replacing fossil fuel-based heating systems with clean, renewable energy solutions, heat pumps can deliver 3 to 5 times greater efficiency than gas boilers, contributing significantly to both energy savings and climate change mitigation.
Now that all components of the “Fit for 55” package have been agreed upon, it is possible to closely examine how these measures will shape the future of heat pumps.
