EPA Administrator Zeldin Launches Aggressive Plan to Combat PFAS Pollution Nationwide

  • EPA Administrator Zeldin announced sweeping new actions to address PFAS contamination.
  • A new agency lead for PFAS and stricter effluent limitations will be implemented.
  • The plan includes establishing a “polluter pays” liability framework to protect communities.
  • Scientific research, testing, and PFAS destruction guidance updates will be accelerated.
  • These steps mark the first of many EPA initiatives to ensure cleaner water, air, and land.

On April 28, 2025, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced a comprehensive set of actions to confront the urgent threat of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) contamination. Under the “Powering the Great American Comeback” initiative, Zeldin outlined a bold strategy that prioritizes clean air, land, and water for all Americans.

Key actions include appointing an agency-wide PFAS lead, developing strict effluent limitation guidelines (ELGs) to prevent PFAS from entering drinking water, and working with Congress and industry leaders to ensure a “polluter pays” liability framework. The EPA will also enhance PFAS testing, expand research efforts, and update PFAS destruction guidance annually to keep pace with new science and technologies.

Administrator Zeldin emphasized the agency’s commitment to strengthening scientific research, fulfilling statutory responsibilities, improving communication, and building strong partnerships with states, tribes, and communities. His leadership reflects a longstanding dedication to tackling PFAS, rooted in his Congressional work with the PFAS Taskforce and support for the PFAS Action Act.

This announcement marks just the beginning of a series of actions that will continue throughout the Trump Administration, aiming to deliver meaningful protections and clean resources to impacted communities nationwide.
