EHPA Fossil Fuel Phase-Out Map: European Countries Move to Ban Fossil Fuel Heaters

In light of Russia’s war in Ukraine, volatile energy prices, and the confirmation that 2023 was the hottest year on record, the urgency for Europe to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels has become clearer than ever. Buildings across Europe consume vast amounts of gas, accounting for 40% of the EU’s energy demand and 36% of its energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. This is largely due to the over 90 million gas and oil boilers currently in use, with a new boiler being installed every eight seconds.

The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) has created a map highlighting existing and announced bans on fossil fuel boilers across Europe. The map differentiates between bans for new buildings and those for existing buildings, and is regularly updated.

The heat pump sector supports the European Commission’s proposal to phase out stand-alone fossil fuel boilers by 2029.
